Strong growth in consumption of lithium led by higher demand for batteriesDemand for lithium has shown strong growth in the middle years of this decade, with world consumption estimated to have increased by 4-5%py from 70,000t in 2002, to reach a record level close to 80,000t lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) in 2005. The new report from market analysts Roskill, notes that growth has been led by higher demand for lithium carbonate in secondary batteries. In 2005, batteries accounted for 20% of total lithium consumption, more than double the 9% market share held in 2000.The Economics of Lithium (10th Edition, 2006) explains that the outlook for lithium consumption also appears to be optimistic. Overall growth is estimated at 4%py, resulting in a rise in world consumption from some 80,000t LCE in 2005 to 97,400t in 2010. Growth in terms of end-use will continue to be led by lithium ion and, increasingly, lithium polymer secondary batteries. Demand for lithium carbonate in this end-use is projected to rise by 10%py from 16,000t in 2005 to 25,800t in 2010, equivalent to over a quarter of the total lithium market. Asia, especially China, South Korea, Taiwan and India, will lead growth in terms of geographical area. In 2004, per capita consumption of lithium in China stood at just 4lb/000 people compared with over 21lb in the USA, indicating significant potential market growth.
